Vellano erewr
Vellano is considered the main village of the Valleriana valley. It is 600 meters above sea level and appears as it did many centuries ago. Three ancient gates let you into the village: Porta Bacese, Porta Calda and Porta Borghigiana - the latter being the best preserved.
Tiny, narrow roads lead up to the central square, embellished with several fountains and the soaring municipal tower, or up to the ancient castle church of Saint Michael, said to have been used as a place for the gathering of lost and found items. Beyond its bulwarks, which were curiously built at a lower height than the village, the enchanting Church of Saints Sisto and Martino hides a fascinating crypt surmounted by cross vaults resting on sculpted pillars. The use of pietra serena (grey stone) throughout the buildings is the main characteristic of the village: a private collection at the "Miniera di Publio" (The Publio Mine) reveals the secrets of ancient working techniques.
A stop at Vellano is absolutely recommended, especially on a moonlit summer night when your eyes will be enraptured by the glimmering lights of the boundless valley below: the Valdinievole. Indulge yourself in the sound of silence, the sound that our civilization has forgotten. Then, you will understand why Vellano has held a special fascination on the many artists who gather here each year in September for a unusual rendezvous not to be missed: the Vellanoarte.
