Medicina
At 537 meters above sea level soars the little hamlet of Medicina that in the past was the stage, like its neighbouring hillside villages, of harsh battles between the peoples of Lucca and Florence. A milestone in its history is represented by the passage of Francesco Ferrucci on the night between July 31st and August 1st 1529, right before the onset of the memorable battle of Gavinana. The narrow paved roads of the village are dotted with several stone markers engraved with dates that go as far back as the 16th and 17th centuries; a testimony to the level of well-being that local people enjoyed at that time. Today, Medicina is the destination of healthy trekking excursions through lush green woods that lead up to the slopes of Mount Telegrafo.  Here, an oratory dedicated to Saint Anne was built before the 16th century, which now hosts popular summer time folk festivals.
