Around Monsummano
Monsummano Terme, whose origins date back to the 17th century, is renowned worldwide for its unique natural thermal grottos (one name says it all, Grotta Giusti, its most celebrated thermal center), the prestigious La Pievaccia golf club, its museums, and valuable architectural and artistic testimonies. Last but not least, Monsummano Terme is a must for connoisseurs of high quality chocolate. The surrounding areas are also worthwhile visiting, as they offer many corners to explore. If you are fond of nature, history and art, here you will find what you’re looking for: cultural, naturalistic and geologic itineraries, as well as routes that will lead you to ancient castles and fortresses scattered all over the Montalbano area. A stone’s throw away you will find the Padule di Fucecchio natural reserve (Fucecchio Marshes) and, looking toward the hills, the well outlined profile of Montevettolini can be distinguished. This is a small village that developed around a Medicean Villa belonging to the Barco Reale complex, a former Grand Duke of Tuscany hunting reserve. The urban center of the valley is dominated by Monsummano Alto (Uptown), at about 350 meters above sea level. Its singular layout and the majestic pentagonal tower remind us of the magical epoch of the Middle Ages.
A breathtaking view can be admired from the top of the Castle: your eyes will embrace the entire valley below and, on a clear day, even catch a glimpse of the blue Tyrrhenian Sea off in the distance.
