Pontito
Lost in the virgin mountains at 750 meters above sea level, near the spring of the Pescia Maggiore stream, Pontito is the most remote village of the Valleriana valley, the farthest from the town of Pescia. Pontito is the homeland of Lazzaro Papi, historiographer, explorer of the Eastern Indies, scholar and author of the first Italian translation of “Paradise Lost” by John Milton. This village has very ancient roots and, according to tradition, the origin of its name is to be attributed to a bridge built by none other than Tito Augusto. Its very singular ‘fan’ urban layout makes Pontito one of the most characteristic villages scattered across the valley. Its narrow roads are laid out in a pattern of rays that converge at the beautiful Romanesque church of S.S. Andrea and Lucia. Still visible inside the hamlet is a noteworthy 15th century baptismal font made entirely of pietra serena (grey stone) and decorated with cornucopia and rosettes.
