Stiappa
Lost amidst lonesome mountains resting gently on the southern slope of Mount Battifolle, Stiappa is the penultimate walled village you will reach in the Val di Torbola proceeding upward along the Pescia torrent. According to folk tradition, it was famous for its beautiful women and delicious cuisine. Over many centuries it marked the borderline between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Lucca, its dominion long fought over for its optimal strategic position. Today, the most evident traces of its past splendour can be seen in the four ancient stone mills that are still visible along the course of the Pescia torrent, below the village: the Fontanone Mill (fountain mill), the Sotto Mill (lower mill), the Sopra Mill (upper mill) and the Stiappa or Grillo Mill (cricket mill). They have been partially restored, and one of them still bears the date indicating its 16th-century construction on the architrave. The four mills are part of an itinerary called the “Mills Route”.
