Sorana
The ancient Rock of Sorana dominates its strategic position that leads into the valleys formed by the two branches of the Pescia River. Famous for its iron foundries and paper mills, it played a key role as a rest stop during the times when the hillside villages were connected only by steep, almost impassable mule-tracks. Today, its name is associated with one of the most exquisite products of local gastronomy: the famous Sorana IGP bean, cultivated on the dry bed of the Pescia torrent and renowned worldwide for the delicacy of its skin and unparalleled taste. Visiting Sorana means to get in touch, every step of the way, with water. A stroll along its steep winding roads will lead you to the central square, decorated with fountains, where the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul soars; a fountain in a little loggia decorates this jewel. From Sorana, you can take a mule trail and, after less than two kilometers, you will reach the top of a hill – 800 meters above sea level – which divides the valley formed by the portion of the Pescia river flowing through Pontito and the valley formed by the portion of the river that crosses Calamecca. A symbolic and absolutely fascinating place opens up in front of your eyes. Here, once upon a time, rose the castle of Lignana, which witnessed many harsh battles for its dominion. The castle was completely destroyed, but today archaeological excavations are bringing its ancient remains to new light. Lignana was the homeland of friar Domenico Buonvicini’s family, a devoted follower of Savonarola.
