Castelvecchio
The church of S. Ansano, in hamlet of Castelvecchio, is one of the most ancient and impressive sacred buildings one can find in the area of Lucca. Tradition tells us that this is one of the seven churches founded by Bishop San Frediano from Lucca, who lived in the 6th century A.D. The church underwent several renovations over the course of time and it is oriented according to ancient architectural rules, that is to say with its apse facing to the East. It was then completely rebuilt, presumably by Comacini masters using local stones. Inside, beneath the presbytery, worthwhile visiting is the crypt: folk legends assert that it was built exactly in the place where San Frediano retired in prayer and confession – a confined place where light is faintly admitted through a narrow slit. The center of the village hosts the seat of the former Compagnia del Santissimo Rosario (Confraternity of the Holy Rosary), which consists of a wide room whose walls are entirely frescoed by the talented hands of a 17th-century anonymous artist. This characteristic Medieval hamlet, still perfectly preserved, is plunged in a landscape whose original structure has remained untouched over the course of time.
