The Hamlets
In Valdinievole, all one has to do is glance up at the amphitheater of hills that over look the valley and there, amongst the olive trees, the battlements of ancient fortifications and the dense concentration of old hamlets with their parish church bell towers stand out against the sky.
Between the Pescia mountains on the one side and the peak of Monsummano Alto hill on the other, a series of small villages tumble one after another attesting to that Medieval and peasant past that is particularly characteristic of the Valdinievole and Tuscany: Uzzano, Stignano, Colle, Buggiano Castello, Massa, Cozzile and behind them, a landscape intact where vestiges of the past dot the woods. These hamlets are places where the Templar Knights once gathered, such as in Colle, where bitter battles were fought, like in the highlands of Croci (Massa Cozzile), where the remains of the Verruca Fortress are found. Places that testify to an intense community life, such as the Podestà Palace in Buggiano Castello and the Capitano Palace (Captain Palace) in Uzzano, and nuclei of spiritual inspiration and religion found in the numerous Romanesque parish churches. Just a few kilometers from the principle villages of the Valdinievole plain, like Pescia, Montecatini and Monsummano, your holiday will be enriched immersed in the charm of these soft hills, enjoying a simple stroll or a challenging hike, gastronomic breaks, or just by coming in contact with the locals.
