Aramo
On the right hand side of the road leading into the heart of the Swiss Pesciatina, an unusual entrance gate gives access to this little village: the vestibule of the Natività di Maria (Holy Virgin Nativity) oratory. Aramo’s fascination lies in the little houses that seem nestled one on top of the other on the steep slope between which weave narrow winding roads and vertiginously steep stone stairways, a sort of maze that recalls the underground passages that the dwellers of long ago used to escape the village in case of a siege. An upward tangle that ultimately leads to the highest point of the village, where the magnificent church of San Frediano soars and ends at a cliff with a sudden sheer drop to the valley below.
