Ponte Buggianese
The territory of Ponte stretches over the southern part of the Valdinievole valley and encompasses a large portion of the marshy land of the Padule di Fucecchio (Fucecchio Marshes).  Beginning in the 17th century, Ponte (and, more precisely, the district of Capannone) was a customs station for incoming goods during commercial trade business across the Padule; this gives testimony to the important role played by “waterways” in the development of the town. Today, Ponte represents an ideal starting point for excursions to the Padule for the discovery of ancient rural culture. Ponte is also renowned for its parish church, consecrated to  Saint Michael Archangel, which preserves a valuable cycle of frescos painted by Pietro Annigoni, the “painter of queens”, and his followers. Contemporary art has also left its indelible mark across the squares of the town: an impressive monumental sculpture by Jorio Vivarelli dedicated to the Resistenza (underground resistance movements during World War II) and to historical memory, which finds deep roots in Ponte Buggianese.
