Buggiano
Buggiano preserves a valuable artistic heritage and is surrounded by astonishing natural landscapes that will fascinate visitors.
On the hills dotted with olive groves, the charming tiny hamlet of Colle can be found, where the Knights of Malta founded a hermitage; Stignano, the hometown of the great humanist Coluccio Salutati; and the unmistakable profile of Buggiano Castello. The Palazzo Pretorio (Governor’s Palace), the inestimable baptismal font and the thirteenth-century tribune preserved in the Church of St. Niccolao, make of Buggiano Alto (uptown) a real coffer of treasures that has remained unvaried over the course of time. This little town is the renowned “citrus hamlet” thanks to its refined tradition of flourishing gardens and prosperous orchards that are hidden inside the walls of its magnificent villas.
Let your glance graze over the wide flatland that opens below you, and your eyes will embrace the imposing monumental Baroque building of Villa Bellavista and the little Church of St. Maria in Selva, where a Renaissance cloister is secluded. A stop at the village of Borgo is also worthwhile, half way between Pescia and Montecatini. Halfway between Pescia and Montecatini is the village of Borgo that also merits a visit. It was once the homeland of merchants and brokers. You can still visit the Basilica of the Holy Crucifix with its venerated wooden cross that dates back to the 14th century.
