Pieve a Nievole
The origins of this tiny charming town are to be traced far away in time. Its name derives from the ancient Pieve (church) of San Pietro a Neure that dates back to the 10th-11th century, which underwent massive renovations in 1884. The modern development of the town is owed to its position as a strategic crossroads: in past times, it was crossed by the ancient Cassia Route, half way between Lucca and Pistoia and then, in the second half of the 19th century, became a crucial station along the newly born railway connecting  Florence to the seaside. Today, its neighborhood is crossed by the motorway connecting Florence to its seaside resorts.   The town is located just a stone’s throw from Montecatini Terme and its worldwide renowned thermal establishments; it acquired administrative autonomy in 1905 and the 16th century building called “Casa Porciani” – formerly a hunting mansion owned by the Medici family – was selected to accommodate the town hall. Tradition tells us that the supreme poet Dante walked across the hills surrounding Pieve while waiting for the final outcome of the battle between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines in 1315, and stopped on a little bridge on the Via de’ Tanelli that leads to Montecatini Alto (uptown), which is now known as “Dante’s bridge”.
