Larciano
The ancient origins of the town of Larciano go back as far as the Roman empire. The town rises from the slopes of the Montalbano hills up to the flatland that stretches over the Padule di Fucecchio (Fucecchio Marshes). On top of the hills, we can still admire the fortified Castle with its donjon and tower, the archaeological museum and the Romanesque church of S. Silvestro. Among olive groves the hamlet of Cecina stands out with the remains of its ancient boundary walls and the church of S. Niccolò. On the plain, passing beyond San Rocco, which corresponds to the main portion of the town, a stop at Castelmartini is recommended. In past times, this town was a key crossroads to avoid the marshy areas and accommodated the ancient hospital of S. Donnino. Today, it hosts the Center for Documentation and Research of the Padule di Fucecchio (Fucecchio Marshes), the starting point for excursions around the natural reserve. In the neighbourhood, testimonies to recent history are still visible: the Memorial Garden and an imposing monument in memory of World War II victims.
