Chiesina Uzzanese
Chiesina Uzzanese is located near the Padule di Fucecchio (Fucecchio Marshes), at the border between the Provinces of Pistoia and Lucca. It is a young town, since it was only acknowledged administrative autonomy in 1963. Its medieval origins are witnessed by the Xenodochio (hostel), once used as a shelter for pilgrims who walked along the Francigena route heading for Rome. Beginning in the 14th century, a new settlement developed in the surrounding area, thanks to the peasants who began cultivating the reclaimed lands. Over time, the modern development of the town was determined by its geographic position crossing the Valdinievole valley: it became an important crossroad connecting postal roads for Lucca and Pisa. In more recent times, the motorway that links Florence to the seaside was constructed next to the town of Chiesina Uzzanese, bringing  economic benefits to the entrepreneurial activities carried out by its tenacious inhabitants.
