Villa Renatico
The history of Monsummano Terme is intertwined with the life of Ferdinando Martini, politician, journalist and writer, who was the first to have Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio fable published in instalments in a children’s magazine of the time, “Il Giornale dei Bambini” (Children’s Magazine) in 1881. His former residence, Villa Renatico, now accommodates the Mac,n (Museum of Contemporary Art).
The Villa is located at the foot of the hill where Monsummano Alto (Uptown) soars. It was built around the year 1887 based on a project by architect Cesare Spighi, who strictly followed Tuscany’s eclectic taste in vogue during the second half of the 19th century. The Villa is surrounded by an ample park, renowned for its valuable vegetation, such as cork-oaks, camphor trees and sequoias.
The Mac,n gathers a display of works of art by over 50 20th-century Tuscan artists and hosts interesting temporary exhibitions, theater performances, conferences, chamber orchestra concerts and, in the summertime, evening film projections.
