Monsummano Alto
Monsummano Alto (Uptown) is located on a rocky peak about 340 meters above sea level and, on its eastern side, overlooks the entire Valdiniveole plain.
Monsummano Alto is particularly interesting from a botanical point of view because of its rich vegetation that is characterized by typical Mediterranean flora and the presence of a minimum of 25 different species of orchids. It can be reached in just a few minutes by car, driving along a panoramic road that leaves from Monsummano Terme, or on foot by walking along the many “geological paths” that, departing from Grotta Giusti, allow visitors can see the passing of the centuries in the stratified sediments of the hills. At the top of the hill, the uptown is still surrounded by the ancient boundary walls that stretch over a two kilometer distance; the remains of the imposing pentagonal tower, the ancient “Nostra Donna” door and the small church of St. Niccolao stand out solitary against the blue sky. All around the eyes take in a breathtaking view of the entire valley below and far off on the horizon, when the sky is clear, even a glimpse of the sea.
