The Pilgrims’ Hostel
The Osteria dei Pellegrini (The Pilgrims’ Hostel) originates as a shelter to travellers on their pilgrimage to worship the sacred image of the Holy Virgin inside the Sanctuary of Fontenuova. Today it is the seat of the prestigious Museo della Città e del Territorio (Museum of the Town and Territory).
In 2001, the Museum was awarded a special mention from the EMYA (European Museum for the Year Award). It is divided into different sections and was conceived as a place that could offer testimony to the local history and lifestyle of Monsummano, Valdinievole and Montalbano. It is a dynamic museum where educational tours for children and temporary art exhibitions are organized, besides the opportunity for meetings and encounters for people of all ages.
Its collection includes valuable and rare goldsmith works, such as the Virgin’s Crown in gold and precious stones, a gift from the Medici Grand Duke, and many liturgical objects and costumes. These, together with an ivory crucifix attributed to the Giambologna school that is exhibited in the small sacred art museum adjacent to the Sanctuary, constitute the so-called “Treasure of Fontenuova”.
