Massa
Following the footsteps of the Countess Matilde di Canossa, who stopped in Massa in 1078, you will take a journey back in time, to the Middle Ages. This small hamlet, whose access is through the fourteenth century “Porta ai Campi” (Gateway to the Fields), boasts a Romanesque parish church dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption that was reconstructed in the 17th century, the massive Visitation Monastery, the Loggia del Podestà with its aristocratic coat of arms and, inside the 17th century Convent of St. Francis de Sales, the enchanting St. Michele Museum of Sacred Art. The steep main road is lined with noble palaces, one of which houses the Municipal Historical Archives, and is dotted with ancient stone and brick buildings. This road slopes upward toward the village where, concealed by a dense olive grove, are the remains of the ancient medieval Fortress. Starting from here, you can visit Cozzile, Croci, the Verruca Frotress and other hamlets in the surrounding hills by proceeding along the silent paths amidst olive trees and the azure blue sky.
