Cozzile
The ancient Roman mule trail that joins the villages of Massa and Cozzile slopes upward steeply among olive groves and cultivated plots of land.  The imposing De Gubernatis Palace dominates the trail and leads to a small hamlet where time truly has come to a standstill. Here, on a clear day, a “panorama of eight provinces” can be enjoyed: Montalbano, Vallombrosa, Amiata, Volterra, the hills of Livorno…and as far off as the sea.  Cozzile was pilgrimage territory.  Followers of the cult of Saint Jacopo, to whom the small local church is dedicated, moved in great numbers along the Francigena route toward Compostela.
That atmosphere can still be felt in these hills in its small architectural treasures:  just outside the urban centre, where there is the Margine Chapel of Cozzile; in the woods surrounding the Malocchio area that, despite the literary meaning of its Italian name (evil eye), is a rare oasis of peace; in the testimonies to history like the Croci Sanctuary, the path leading to the Barano Bridge and the remains of the Verruca Fortress, once fiercely coveted but unconquerable. In the stillness of nature and infinite panoramas you will find yourself again and the hectic rhythm of daily life will drift away.
