Colle
According to some academics, the Church of St. Lorenzo that looks over the small hamlet of Colle could have originally been a mansio (in Roman times a rest stop) for the Templar Knights. On the façade of the building that previously hosted the Knights of the Order of Malta, their Maltese cross coat of arms is still visible. The Romanesque bell tower embellished with two orders of windows with single and double openings is perhaps that which remains of a primitive defense tower. Its bell, called “La Smarrita” (The Lost One), rang during the night to help people who might have gotten lost to find their way home. These days, getting lost along the streets of these small villages and, even more so, in the surrounding hills is quite pleasant! By taking the path through the olive groves, beyond the Cessana stream, you reach the slope of a foothill with the evocative Italian name ‘Folavento’, meaning gust of wind, where the ancient Campioni Oratory stands. In alternative, take one of the several itineraries still amidst typical Tuscan vegetation, to discover sacred “margini” (shrines), little churches, small bridges, brooks…immersing yourself in the charming countryside that has remained intact for centuries.
