The Citrus Hamlet
On top of a hill dotted with dense olive groves, Buggiano Castello is characterized by the bright red color of the façades of its buildings so particular that it is called “Buggiano red”. The remains of the Fortress, the Podestà Palace, the Church of St. Niccolao, the art works realized by Andrea del Castagno and Bicci di Lorenzo’s School, a very precious Baptismal Font and the ancient Abbey make this hamlet a treasure trove of Romanesque architecture. But, above all, it is a place where, in the gardens of the villas and former tower-houses, the tradition of cultivating continues with oranges, melangoli (bitter oranges), mandarin oranges, tangerines, different varieties of lemon, as well as strawberry trees, jujubes and pomegranates, all in a fascinating interweaving of the countryside and the urban center. Every three years the owners of this extraordinary inheritance open their gardens to visitors. In this way, under the names of  “Secret Garden Love Garden”, “Olive Land”, “Tortoise Garden”, “Baroque Garden” (perhaps the most sumptuous of the gardens, inside the ancient Sermolli Villa), these gardens become the protagonists of “Borgo degli agrumi” (The Citrus Hamlet) .
A unique opportunity for people who are fond of ornamental citrus fruits and garden architecture, for those who wish to discover the true Tuscany and, especially, for lovers of beauty and harmony.
