San Baronto
On the way from Lamporecchio to Pistoia, one is whisked away by enchanting natural panoramas that gracefully alternate with the testimonies of the Medieval and Renaissance past that saw its peaks of splendor in these lands. Near the village of Collececioli, the remains of the Vitoni Tower can be admired, which once was part of the ancient Montalbano hills defense fortress system. After a few kilometers of uphill climb, you will reach San Baronto, a tiny village plunged amidst dense woods that form a sort of natural bulwark protecting the inhabited center. This village was settled along the passage that leads to the plains of Pistoia and Prato from the Montalbano hills and it truly resembles a majestic terrace with a stronghold over the surrounding valley. Legend tells us that the Romanesque church dedicated to San Baronto was built in only one night. It still preserves an evocative crypt partially decorated with frescos
San Baronto is the patron saint of bicycle riders and those who are fond of the Giro d’Italia (the Italian multi-stage tour) are perfectly familiar with the challenging uphill that, if conquered, is awarded with the Montalbano Mountain Grand Prize. But, San Baronto is also an ideal starting point for strolls around the area where several posted trails branch out amidst the nearby hills heading toward Pistoia or toward Vinci, Comeana and Carmignano.
