To Vinci
Departing from San Baronto and proceeding along the way to Vinci, the splendid panorama of Leonardo’s beloved hills can be enjoyed. Along the way, a stop at the Villa Torrigiani, also known as the “American Lady’s Villa”, is well worth a pause. Or, delve into the many paths that surround Papiano for a look at the remains of the ancient boundary walls of the Barco Reale, Ferdinando II Medici’s hunting reserve, or the Mill dating back to the 18th century. In the ancient Porciano fortress, the parish church of San Giorgio rises on the slope of a mountain where one can admire a very unique panorama: all of the Valdinievole and as far as Montecarlo di Lucca and the Apuan Mountains, San Miniato di Pisa, Volterra and, when the sky is very clear, even San Gimignano. On the way back to Lamporecchio, those who prefer to take country routes can stop at the small church of Orbignano, dedicated to the miraculous St. Maria del Pruno, and admire a bas-relief representing the Virgin and Child, of uncertain attribution between artists Donatello and Michelozzo. For those that love to walk, the areas surrounding Porciano are ideal since they lead to the most intimate and genuine heart of the Tuscan countryside.
