Artists for Pinocchio
The Park of Pinocchio in Collodi took nearly thirty years to complete; between 1956 and 1987. This park represents one of the first landscape architectural experiences ever achieved in Italy. The adventures of the famous puppet are told through expressive works realized by outstanding artists, scattered across one hectare of dense, brush-covered land and perfumed specimens of Mediterranean flora. The Park was designed by Pietro Porcinai, the greatest Italian landscape architect of the past century. Emilio Greco gave his valuable contribution with the famous bronze group of statues entitled Pinocchio and the Fairy, while Venturino Venturi conceived a spectacular Square of Mosaics that illustrate the most important episodes of the adventures of Pinocchio. The fantasy journey across Toyland snakes its way among the twenty-one bronze and steel sculptures by Pietro Consagra and constructions by Marco Zanuso.
Giovanni Michelucci, the great architect from Pistoia, designed the Osteria del Gambero Rosso (The Red Prawn Tavern), whose bright red arcades call to mind the pincers of a prawn. Michelucci also launched the idea, later developed by Carlo Anzilotti, of a Museum-Library for a “Laboratory of Words and Figures”.
