Pietro Annigoni, outstanding portraitist, also left his indelible mark in Valdinievole, as he did the world over with his images of queens and other renowned protagonists of contemporary history, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John XXIII, Prince Philip, Princess Margaret, the Queen Mother of England, Presidents John F. Kennedy and Johnson, Farah Diba, the Shah of Persia.
In Ponte Buggianese, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio preserves a marvelous cycle of frescoes depicting sacred images (Deposition and Resurrection, Jeremy, Isaiah, the Pool of Bethesda, the Resurrection of Lazarus, Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Last Supper, the Apocalypse, the Pentecost), which are the fruit of twenty years of masterful commitment. Colors and lines are reminders of a by-gone perfection; while the strong communicative capability expressed by figures make them closer to modern times.
