Historical sites
The vestiges of a memorable past are not found just in the beauty of Montecatini’s thermal establishments. Beside these, it is worthwhile paying a visit to the many historical locales in town that will bewitch you as you are  taken back to the magical atmosphere of the Belle Époque. The Tettuccio thermal establishment hosts the Sala del Caffè (Coffee House): Art Nouveau furniture, frescoes by Giulio Bargellini and landscape paintings by Maria Biseo that render this place spectacular and astonishing. And then, the Sala della Scrittura (Writing Room), decorated by Giuseppe Moroni. The Gran Caffè Gambrinus, inaugurated in 1931 on the premises of the Locanda Maggiore, was the most fashionable place to rendezvous at the time. The Circolo dei Forestieri (Visitors Club), a real art nouveau jewel inside the Tamerici thermal establishment, still honors its past vocation as a place of culture, where exhibitions, concerts, conferences and meetings are arranged. The prosperous garden of Villa Forini Lippi, seat of the Municipal Library, is now the exclusive location for an outdoor cinema. And then, memorabilia of musicians and artists, such as the house where Ruggero Leoncavallo lived; or the historical hotels, such as La Pace or the Plaza-Locanda Maggiore, which hosted many illustrious personalities; and the Art Academy. The Academy, even though its architecture is more recent, displays outstanding works of art that are the creative fruit of artists such as Chini, Guttuso, Messina, Léger, Annigoni, and the precious piano used by Giuseppe Verdi during his periods of vacation at Montecatini.
