Ancient  Tracks
Those who love to stroll amidst untouched landscapes can reach Montecatini Alto (uptown) via an unusual winding path up to the top of the hill that runs parallel to the funicular track. The so-called ‘Short’ road, rolling along among olive groves and virgin vegetation, also corresponds to a Way of the Cross with picturesque artistic stations. Your way will be even more inspired on Holy Friday, when the path is lit for a night procession.
But, this is not the only suggestive route that Montecatini’s surroundings are able to offer.  Via Amore (Love Road) is one of the traits that connected the flatlands to the nearby hills centuries ago. The Via Amore can be walked along departing from Casina Rossa and, winding through the typical, dense Mediterranean bushes, it eventually joins the ‘Short’ road after passing beneath the funicular bridge; a stop will allow visitors to catch a glimpse of ancient stone washbasins. Alternatively, take Via Amore up to the intersection with Via Foresta (Forest Road) that leads to the Monastery of Benedictine nuns of Saint Maria a Ripa, at the gates of Montecatini Alto. A dive into the past and the gentle Tuscan scenarios at a stone’s throw from the town of hot springs and well-being.
