Mills Route
The “Mills Route” is a short but charming itinerary that will take you across the northern part of the Pescia mountains.
Leaving from Stiappa, you will reach Pontito after approximately 3 km and, following a ring trail, return to your departure point. The trail partly follows the river bank and touches the spots where the remains of four ancient water mills are still visible: the Fontanone Mill (fountain mill), the Sotto Mill (lower mill), the Sopra Mill (upper mill) and the Stiappa or Grillo Mill (cricket mill). In the past, these mills represented a crucial resource for local economy but are now in disuse. An uncontaminated landscape will be crossed that is characterized by dense chestnut woods, crystalline stream waters, little walls that contained the river beds of the torrent where the Sorana beans are still cultivated and sudden majestic views that open over the surrounding hamlets.
The Mills Route was opened by the “I Montagnardi” Association, which still takes care of maintenance operations. In summertime, several cultural events and folk festivals are organized for the Mountains environmental safeguard.
