Valleriana
Approximately 60 kilometers from Florence and 20 kilometers from Lucca, in the northern part of the Municipality of Pescia, a vast hilly territory where the slopes are rich with natural springs and streams, olive groves and chestnut woods unfurls before your eyes. This magnificent panorama, still unknown to mass tourism, is called Valleriana and corresponds to the Pescia Upper Valley, although it’s more commonly known as “Svizzera Pesciatina”. It’s an ideal area for nature lovers and for all those who are fond of  environmental  tourism.
Heading to the north, you will see the profiles of Mount Granaio (1043 meters), Bastia (1107),  Lischeta (1075) and, beyond the area encompassed by the Municipality of Pescia, but nonetheless easily reachable, Penna di Lucchio (1176) and Memoriante (1151), followed by Battifolle (1109);  the highest peak in the Pescia area. In its vicinity lies the shelter of Uso di Sotto. The entire area is washed by several torrents of the two main tributaries of the Pescia river.
Ten ancient hamlets are scattered over this little heaven: Pontito (750 meters), San Quirico (529 meters), Stiappa (630 meters), Vellano (600 meters), Medicina (537 meters), Castelvecchio (450 meters), Fibbialla (424 meters), Sorana (410 meters), Aramo (397 meters) and, lastly, Pietrabuona (110 meters), which stands as an access gate from the plain to the hills.
Trails, trekking and bike paths allow you to relish these breathtaking scenarios that stretch toward the Appennines, the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea. You will fully breathe in the richness of pure, sometimes wild, nature and enjoy traces of a by-gone peasant culture found in ancient fountains, water mills, narrow winding roads, as well as in genuine products of local gastronomy, such as the Sorana IGP beans and sweet chestnut flour.
