Pescia Valley
The itinerary that leads you across the Pescia Valley is a key connection between the trekking system in the Svizzera Pesciatina (Swiss Pesciatina) and the Lucca Hills and that of the Padule di Fucecchio Natural reserve. You will follow the ancient Francigena Route that, once upon a time, was traveled by pilgrims to reach the Eternal City.
This itinerary lets you traverse the western side of the Valdinievole valley and, departing from Pescia, follows the Pescia River downstream and up to the Padule marshes. Along your route you will come across several towns and villages (Montecarlo, Chiesina Uzzanese and Ponte Buggianese), follow the gentle bends of the river, cross over small bridges and finally enjoy the spectacular panorama of the wide Valdinievole valley and the surrounding soft rolling hills mantled with olive groves. At times during your walk it is necessary to cross roads where there might be heavy traffic, please be careful.
Nature lovers will be given the thrilling opportunity to come across typical specimens of marshy fauna, such as the white heron or the great blue heron and, in springtime, beautiful examples of local flora, such as pond lilies and yellow irises.
The trail undergoes constant maintenance on behalf of the Consorzio di Bonifica del Padule di Fucecchio (Reclamation Consortium of the Fucecchio Marshes)
