The Cathedral
Access to the town of Pescia is through the Majestic Baroque Arch of Porta Fiorentina, built in 1732 to pay tribute to the last Grand Duke of the Medici dynasty, Giangastone. Beyond this imposing gate, you will find yourself in the district of the Cathedral, also known as Basilica of Saint Maria. From here, an infinite series of magnificent monuments will unfold in front of your eyes.
The Cathedral, flanked by a Romanesque bell tower, preserves the relics of Saint Allucio, besides valuable works by artists from the 16th century up to contemporary times. Worthwhile mentioning is the Turini Chapel, sculpted by a disciple of the Michelangelo school, Raffaello da Montelupo. In the adjacent Bishop Chapel, a glazed ceramic panel depicting the “Triptych of the Holy Virgin with Child between Angels and Saints” was manufactured by Della Robbia workshop. The Biblioteca Capitolare (Capitular Library) has a collection of over 10,000 precious volumes and illuminated codes, masterpieces by the Della Robbia workshop, a “Crowning of the Virgin” realized by Bicci di Lorenzo in 1420, and a pulpit that once belonged to 12th century church that rose on this ground before the Cathedral was erected.Opposite the Cathedral, the ancient Church of Mary Magdalene contains a sculpted cedar crucifix (a copy of the Holy Image preserved in Lucca), to whom local people devote a spectacular candle lit procession each year on May 3rd. Walking along the tiny roads that wind around the Cathedral, between the imposing façades of noble palaces, it is still possible to find traces of the ancient bulwark walls and discover a corner of Tuscany where time seems to have stood still…
