The Paper Route
It was a refined noblewoman, Elisa Baciocchi, princess of Lucca, who suggested to her illustrious brother, Napoleone Bonaparte, that he use the handmade watermarked paper produced in Pescia to print the invitation cards for his wedding with Archduchess Maria from Austria in 1810. Even outstanding artists have chosen this precious paper for their creations, such as Picasso and Annigoni, or writers for their publications, such as Gabriele D’Annunzio. Still today, this valuable paper is produced for prestigious purposes. In Pietrabuona, at the gates of the “Svizzera Pesciatina” (Swiss Pesciatina), memories of this handicraft activity are on display at the Paper Museum. The museum is made up of two buildings: one accommodates the Archives on paper processing, mainly focused on educational activities – the techniques used in the past to produce a sheet of paper by hand are unveiled during live demonstrations; the other building is the ancient “Le Carte” factory (Paper factory) dating back to 1481. This is the beginning of a fascinating itinerary toward the discovery of a land and its tight bonds with water, mills, woods and old manufacturing factories.
