Pescia Festivals
Pescia and its neighborhood have maintained a tight bond with their glorious past and historical rhythms.
Many folk festivals are organized throughout the year, often linked with local traditions and typical products. The small hillside hamlets celebrate their chestnuts, along with necci (chestnut pancakes) and frugiate (roast chestnuts), as well as other characteristic products such as the Sorana beans and other specialties from local gastronomy. In town, at the farmers markets, festivals are devoted to flowers and specialized cultivations, such as citrus fruits. Last but not least, commemorations of Pinocchio, music festivals, theater performances, religious festivities and many other festive occasions that spring from the local communities’ fancy.
Each year, September coincides with the most important rendezvous: the festivities celebrated for the patron Saint that come to a peak on the first Sunday of the month with the Palio dei Rioni (competition between districts). For one week the city is sizzling with celebrations and each district holds banquets, parties, and historical parades. The inhabitants hang the coat of arms that correspond to their district out of their windows. Then, on Sunday, the final bow and arrow competition gets underway and Pescia becomes crowded with noblemen and ladies, knights and condottieri, halberdiers, standard-bearers, drummers, equerries, trumpeters, flag-wavers, crossbow archers, bowmen, musicians… and all of them flow into the main square where the competition takes place.
This is the moment to savor the very nature of this charming little town: you will never find just mere folklore, but intensely felt participation.
