From creativity and the simplest of ingredients come two extraordinary dainty delights: brigidini (paper thin anise flavoured wafers) from Lamporecchio and cialde (wafers) from Montecatini.
According to legend, the origin of the Lamporecchio brigidini dates back to 1300 when a Swedish nun began a long pilgrimage and stopped off in the Montalbano area, in the heart of Tuscany. Here she founded the homonymous convent of the Brigidine order, where she began to produce a delicacy called ‘Brigidino’ made by using special engraved plates that formed the shape of a consecrated Host. Its ingredients are very simple: flour, sugar, eggs and anise seeds. The recipe is handed down from one generation to another by skilful local craftsmen. A cheerful and crispy wafer that you can find at stands during traditional Tuscan festivities. But its home is here, in Lamporecchio, in our land.
Cialde from Montecatini are handmade by a family in Montecatini who has produced them since 1936 using the traditional recipe. It is a very simple sweet, without added fats or preservatives, made up of two fragrant wafers composed of flour, sugar, milk, eggs and crushed almonds. Eaten with ice cream or a dessert wine; you will never forget this delightful experience. A concession to the palate not to be missed and a temptation that can only be yielded to in Montecatini Terme.
