Once upon a time...
There was… “a king!” my young readers will immediately cry out. No, children, you’re wrong. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood; far from it. It was just a common block of firewood, one of those thick, solid logs that are put on the fire in winter to make cold rooms cozy and warm. I don’t really know how this happened, but the fact remains that one day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter. His real name was Mastro Antonio, but everyone called him Mastro Cherry, because the tip of his nose was so round and red and shiny that it looked like a ripe cherry…
This is how the most renowned fable in the world begins, and that thereafter became the inspiration of artists in many fields; from art to music, theater, comics, cartoons and cinema. Memorable is its famous transformation into the animated film produced by Walt Disney in 1939, which was rewarded with two Academy awards and today is included in the list of films to be preserved. And, among the several cinema versions, two films were particularly successful: the one directed by Luigi Comencini in 1971, and broadcast as a series on the first channel of the Italian State Television Broadcast Network (RAI); and the other directed by Roberto Benigni in 2002. And then, the theater version by Carmelo Bene and the musical by Beppe Dati both reinterpreted the fairytale in a new key and resumed the deeply rooted Tuscan origins of the famous puppet.
