Carlo Lorenzini
Carlo Lorenzini was born in Florence on November 24th 1826, the first of nine children in an extremely poor family. His father was a cook and his mother worked as seamstress and maid at the Garzoni family home in Collodi. Indeed, the famous pseudonym used by the writer was actually inspired by the name of the little town where his mother was born. Lorenzini initially used this pseudonym to sign the first articles he wrote for a satiric magazine of his own founding.
His masterpiece, The Adventures of Pinocchio, was first published in instalments in 1881 in a children’s magazine of the time, “Il giornale dei bambini” (Children’s Magazine). The first edition of the fable in book form was released in 1883, enriched with illustrations by Enrico Mazzanti. The book’s success was clamorous and unexpected and over the course of time, the “young readers” of the tale grew, not just in age but also in numbers, so much so that this successful example of children’s literature, which is nonetheless also addressed to adults, boasts translations into 220 foreign languages and dialects, the publication of nearly 300 critical essays, and numerous film interpretations. The Monumental Park, the Villa Garzoni and the town of Collodi represent the inner world of the writer and embrace the whole of his extraordinary artistic and human experience.
